Sturgeon Return to Sweden’s Waters in Historic Reintroduction Effort

After being extinct in Sweden since the early 20th century, the Atlantic sturgeon has made a triumphant return to the River Göta, thanks to the collaborative efforts of scientists, anglers, and various organizations. The “Return of the Sturgeon” initiative, spearheaded by the Swedish Anglers Association and supported by partners from Germany, successfully released 100 juvenile sturgeons that were raised in a breeding facility on Germany’s Baltic coast. These efforts were bolstered by significant improvements in water quality and habitat restoration, demonstrating a commitment to environmental rehabilitation. Project leader Linnéa Jägrud expressed excitement over the reintroduction, emphasizing the rarity and significance of restoring a regionally extinct species to its native river, with hopes of seeing the sturgeon thrive and eventually spawn in their historic habitats.
