Team USA Rises to 3rd Place at Olympics With Only Days Remaining

Team USA is riding high at the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, currently sitting in third place with 24 total medals as the Games enter their final stretch. With the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday, February 22, American athletes still have multiple opportunities to climb the medal standings and potentially overtake both Italy and Norway.

The United States has collected seven gold, 11 silver, and six bronze medals through Day 12, positioning themselves ahead of powerhouse nations like Japan, Germany, and France. Norway leads with 34 total medals, followed by host nation Italy with 26, but Team USA has been gaining momentum. This year’s performance marks improvement from previous Winter Olympics, as the United States is on pace to exceed the 25 medals won at Beijing 2022 and the 23 medals earned at Pyeongchang 2018.

The last two days delivered spectacular moments for American athletes. On Wednesday, legendary alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin ended her eight-year Olympic medal drought with a dominant gold medal performance in the women’s slalom, winning by 1.50 seconds after going 0-for-8 since 2018. Team USA also earned medals from Jake Canter in men’s snowboard slopestyle and cross-country skiers Gus Schumacher and Ben Ogden. Additionally, Quinn Hughes scored a dramatic overtime goal to send the U.S. men’s ice hockey team to the semifinals with a 2-1 victory over Sweden.

Speed skating sensation Jordan Stolz has been another American star, winning two gold medals with Olympic records in both the 500m and 1000m events. With multiple medal events remaining before Sunday’s closing ceremony in Verona’s historic amphitheater, Team USA remains in contention to finish atop the medal standings for the first time since 2002.
