The Best Uber Driver In The World

Joey Romano was lying on the ground with a broken wrist near the University of Texas at Austin, worried about ambulance costs with his limited insurance. He called an Uber instead, and when driver Beni Lukumu arrived, he carefully helped the injured college freshman into the car and drove him first to urgent care, then to the emergency room at no charge. When Lukumu discovered that Romano had no family nearby, he made a decision that would change both their lives forever, he stayed.

From 2 PM until 8 PM, Lukumu sat beside his young passenger in the ER, signing him in and keeping him company through the pain and morphine drip. The hours of missed work never even crossed his mind as he focused on the stranger who needed someone by his side. What Lukumu didn’t know was that Romano was drowning in grief after losing his brother Johnny to leukemia, and had become cold and isolated from the world. That single act of kindness became a turning point, helping Romano see goodness again and inspiring him to help others. Seven years later, the two remain close friends, with Lukumu now working in insurance and Romano as a renewable energy developer, checking in on each other regularly and proving that compassion can create bonds that last forever.
