The Most Powerful Gravity Machine Ever Has Been Created

Zhejiang University in China has begun installing the CHIEF1900 gravitational centrifuge, the largest and most powerful device of its kind ever made, capable of battering objects with 300 times Earth’s gravity to test their resistance to extreme force. The machine, housed within the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility in Hangzhou, can spin objects weighing up to 20 metric tons at speeds generating around 100g of force, which is 40 percent more powerful than a similar device at the US Army Corps of Engineers facility in Mississippi. Scientists and engineers can now test scale models of dams, railway lines, submersibles, and space capsules without risking their destruction, such as building a three meter model of a 300 meter tall dam and spinning it at 100g to replicate the same stress levels the full scale structure would experience. The device can also compress time itself by allowing centuries long processes to be tested in days, such as studying how environmental pollutants leach through soil over thousands of years.

Chief scientist Chen Yunmin explained that they aim to create experimental environments spanning milliseconds to tens of thousands of years under normal or extreme conditions of temperature and pressure, giving scientists the chance to discover entirely new phenomena or theories. The construction involved a large multidisciplinary team often operating without any precursor blueprints to build the most powerful device of its kind more or less from scratch. The facility is open to users from universities, research institutes, and industries both domestic and overseas, promoting international collaboration on groundbreaking experiments. From testing the structural stability of massive infrastructure to exploring fundamental physics, CHIEF1900 opens doors to discoveries that were previously impossible, proving that sometimes the best way to understand our world is to push it to its absolute limits.
