The World’s Oldest Basketball Referee Chasing A World Record

Most people hang up their whistles long before they reach their 80s, but Michael Martorana of Regina, Saskatchewan, is not most people. The veteran basketball referee is still running up and down the court at 80 years old and is now officially chasing a Guinness World Record to be recognized as the oldest active basketball official on the planet. For Martorana, the hardwood floor has been a constant companion throughout the decades, a place where the love of the game and the satisfaction of keeping things fair has never faded no matter how many years have passed. His pursuit of a world record is not about chasing fame or a spotlight, but about showing up for the sport he has devoted so much of his life to, for as long as his legs and his passion will carry him.

The process of earning a Guinness title requires careful documentation and official verification, but those who know Martorana say the real record worth celebrating is the one he has already quietly built over a lifetime of dedicated service to basketball in his community. Referees are the unsung heroes of any sport, the people on the floor who make the game possible but who rarely receive the recognition that players and coaches get to enjoy. Martorana’s story is a wonderful reminder that a love of sport does not come with an expiration date, and that some of the most truly inspiring figures in any arena are not the ones scoring the points but the ones making sure the game is played the right way. Whether or not the official Guinness certificate eventually arrives, an 80 year old man still lacing up his shoes and stepping onto a basketball court is already one of the most uplifting sports stories to come along in quite some time.
