Therapy Dogs Bring Comfort to Students After School Fire

Two months after the Eaton Fire destroyed Saint Mark’s School in Altadena, students are adjusting to a new learning environment with the help of therapy dogs. The school, now temporarily located at EF Academy in Pasadena, welcomed more than a dozen comfort dogs to bring joy and relief to children processing the trauma of displacement.

The initiative, organized by North County San Diego Love on a Leash, gave students a chance to interact with the dogs, easing stress and anxiety. The simple presence of the animals provided a much-needed source of comfort, helping students settle into their new routine. With nearly 240 children affected by the fire, the visit served as a reminder of the strength and resilience of their school community.

For many, the loss went beyond the classroom—some students and faculty members also lost their homes in the fire. Despite these challenges, moments of connection and support, like the therapy dog visit, are helping them move forward. As they continue rebuilding, small acts of kindness and companionship are making a difference in their journey toward healing.
