This City Is Going Car-Free for Earth Day

On Earth Day, more than 50 streets across New York City’s five boroughs will temporarily close to car traffic in honor of Earth Day. The initiative, known as “Car-Free Earth Day,” invites residents to enjoy their city in a new way—from music and live performances to pop-up art and community programs. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., plazas and thoroughfares will become vibrant public spaces, transforming the city into a walking-friendly celebration of environmental awareness.

This year’s festivities will include five new public art installations created by local artists, each centered around sustainability and climate awareness. The event aims to inspire New Yorkers to think differently about their streets—and their impact on the planet. As NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said, it’s a reminder that the way we move through the world matters, and even one day without cars can spark lasting change.
