This Is About To Become The First State In America To Ban Large Data Centers

Maine is on the verge of becoming the first state in America to ban the construction of large data centers, and the reason comes down to something residents feel every month when they open their electricity bills. Between 2021 and 2026, electricity prices in Maine rose nearly 60 percent, among the highest increases in the country. When the artificial intelligence boom began driving massive new data center proposals into the state, drawing on the same aging power grid that Maine families already depend on, lawmakers decided to act before the problem grew larger. The Maine House passed a bill blocking permits for any new data center requiring more than 20 megawatts of power, with the moratorium running until late 2027. The governor has signaled support, the Senate is expected to follow, and Maine would become the first state anywhere in the country to take this kind of stand.

The bill also creates a new Data Center Coordination Council tasked with studying how these facilities affect ratepayers, grid reliability and the environment, and developing a framework for responsible future development. The legislator who introduced the bill said the goal was to take a proactive approach unlike anything any other state has tried. Communities in Wiscasset and Lewiston had already pushed back against data center proposals over water usage and energy concerns before the statewide measure even passed, and the city of Bangor is fast-tracking its own local ordinance while the state bill moves forward. An economist who follows construction trends nationally called Maine the canary in the coal mine, noting that at least ten other states are watching closely and weighing similar measures. The decision reflects a growing sentiment in communities around the country that the pace of big technology’s infrastructure expansion should not outrun the ability of the people living near it to understand what they are agreeing to.
