Turning Rubik’s Cubes Into Jaw Dropping Portraits

Most people know a Rubik’s Cube as that colorful little puzzle that has been frustrating and delighting people since the 1980s, but a growing number of creative artists have discovered something surprising: when you line up hundreds of them together, each one twisted to just the right colors, they stop looking like puzzles and start looking like paintings. Rubik’s Cube mosaics work the same way a digital photo does, with each cube acting as a large pixel, its colored squares blending together from a distance to create shockingly detailed portraits of faces, landmarks, and beloved icons. Dylan Sadiq stumbled onto this art form during the quiet of 2020, when the engineering student found himself at home with a burning desire to build something entirely his own. He wrote a custom computer program that could take any image, pixelate it, and translate the colors into Rubik’s Cube-friendly shades, then invested nearly every dollar he had in 600 cubes and set to work.

That first piece, a tribute to NBA star Luka Doncic, took over 12 hours to assemble. After Sadiq posted the video and tagged the Dallas Mavericks, the team commented, reposted, and followed him overnight. Word spread quickly and today he travels the country bringing his cube art experiences to stadiums and major events, partnering with sports teams to create custom portraits and inviting fans to help build them together in real time. His most memorable commission came when NBA center Miles Turner, a fellow cube enthusiast, direct messaged him after seeing his portrait online and invited Sadiq to his home to unbox it together with family and friends. Rubik’s Cube mosaic art has even become an official judged category at competitive cubing events worldwide, meaning this wonderful art form has its very own stage, and artists like Sadiq are proving it deserves to be there. In fact, the image up top is a cube mosaic from the 2014 Rubik’s Cube World Championship!
