Two 100-Year-Old Tortoises Just Had Their First Babies

In a heartwarming twist of nature, two nearly century-old Galapagos tortoises at the Philadelphia Zoo have become first-time parents. The zoo announced the arrival of four healthy hatchlings, marking the first successful Galapagos tortoise birth in its 150+ year history. The proud parents, Mommy and Abrazzo, are the zoo’s oldest residents, both estimated to be around 100 years old. Mommy, who arrived at the zoo in 1932, is considered one of the most genetically important tortoises in the species survival plan.

The tiny hatchlings currently weigh about as much as a chicken egg and are being carefully cared for behind the scenes. The zoo is still monitoring other eggs, hoping more will hatch soon. A public debut and naming contest are planned, giving visitors a chance to meet the newest members of this remarkable reptile family.
